Thomas Markle Sr. arrested in Florida over alleged child sexual abuse material

Markle, who is reported to be 82, was taken into federal custody near Tampa on Friday morning. The Guardian said U.S. prosecutors confirmed the custody, while other reports cited people familiar with the matter. The available reporting describes the case as involving allegations rather than an established criminal finding.

The South China Morning Post reported that the arrest took place at the retirement home where Markle lives near Tampa, citing people familiar with the investigation who were not authorised to speak publicly. Variety, citing CBS News reporting, said the case remained sealed. The supplied material does not include charging documents or a direct statement from the FBI.

Several reports linked the investigation to the alleged discovery of hundreds or potentially thousands of child sexual abuse images at Markle’s former home in the Philippines. Rolling Stone, Euronews and EL PAÍS reported the account, but the available evidence does not establish the images’ provenance, legality or any judicial finding about them.

The reporting also contains a denial from Markle, according to Clarín, although the supplied material does not provide a direct statement from him. That account remains part of the unresolved dispute surrounding the allegations.

Some reports specifically characterized the arrest as an FBI operation, while others referred more generally to federal agents or U.S. prosecutors. The Hindu and La Repubblica attributed the FBI description to their reporting, but no direct FBI statement is supplied. With the case reportedly sealed, the specific charges and the outcome of the proceedings remain unclear in the available material.
