A series of false bomb threats disrupted passenger flights operated by several airlines in multiple European countries, triggering emergency procedures and, in some cases, emergency landings.

ANSA reported that two flights bound for Rome Fiumicino were affected. At least some of the alerts linked to those flights were sent by email, according to ANSA Cronaca. The report said two Eurofighters took off from Grosseto and escorted one flight to Rome.

Security checks cited by ANSA produced negative results, and the alerts were determined to be false. ANSA also cited cases in Warsaw, Sofia and Murcia, indicating that the disruption extended beyond the flights linked to Rome.

It remains unclear whether the incidents across Europe were coordinated. ANSA reported that there appeared to be no connection with cases in other European cities, while Clarín described unconfirmed hypotheses about a possible link to a cyberattack on supermarkets and speculation by some observers about Russia. The available reports do not establish either explanation or identify those responsible.
